When I see the amount of toys my kids have I'm more than slightly embarrassed. Especially considering all the children around the world who don't even have a second set of clothes - let alone toys. That's why I was thrilled to hear of 'Operation Christmas Child', a charity solely focused on giving children in third world countries a special gift at Christmas.
How do I get involved?
Get your hands on a shoebox (or a few). See Chappies Sam or Rosalie at NVSS or the front reception at Carmichael College (during school term time) or contact me here to get your boxes. Get your kids involved by giving them each their own shoebox to fill! But hurry! There's only three weeks until they're due!
What do I do with my box?
Choose who you will be giving your gift to. Boy or girl, aged 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Fill your shoebox with brand new items suitable for your chosen recipient.
What sorts of things can I put in my box?
Toys: tennis ball, skipping rope, yo-yo, doll, truck/car, small instrument, small stuffed animal, torch, small puzzle, books, soccer ball with pump.
School supplies/stationary: pencils, crayons, colouring book or paper pad, stickers.
Clothing: thongs, socks, hat, hair accessories, jewellery, watches, sunglasses.
Hygiene products: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, comb or brush.
Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.
It might also be a good idea to avoid very small items which could be a choking hazard for young children.
What do I do with my box when I'm finished?
Download and print a label from here to specify who your gift is for. Make a donation to help cover costs of postage/transportation. Alternatively, you can donate $9 to cover postage and also receive tracking labels to follow your box and find out where it gets sent. Click here to 'Follow your box'.
Where can I drop off my box?
Shoeboxes are due by Sunday 18th of October and can be dropped off to Carmichael College reception. Or click here for other contacts in Kippa Ring and Narangba where boxes can be dropped off.
In what other ways can I support this charity?
There are many different projects this charity is involved in world wide. Click here to read more or make a donation to a different project.
Thank you for your involvement in this worthwhile cause. The joy it brings these children is phenomenal and their smiles are absolutely priceless!
