Presents or Presence?

Less than two weeks until Christmas?! Where has the time gone?

I’m thinking your to do list might look something similar to mine:

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Put up christmas lights and decorations

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Plan meals and write grocery list

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Attend Christmas break up parties

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Catch up with those you haven’t seen for ages who are desperate to catch up before Christmas

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Plan and pack for the holiday

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Manage excited, sugar-crazed kids

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Keep the kids entertained on school holidays

  • BUY PRESENTS!

  • Plus all the rest I’ve forgotten!

I was beginning to feel those little twitches of panic when thinking about all I had to do in less than two weeks, wondering how I’ll possibly fit it all in. Shopping, cooking, work, cleaning, parties, wrapping, Christmas activities with kids, planning for the holiday, stressing about trying not to stress...

Until I saw this timely reminder (see picture below).

Christmas isn’t about busyness, stress, frustration, feeling hurried… and harried!

I’m ashamed of myself for forgetting what it’s really about: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity… the list goes on.

I’m changing my to do list. The new one has more to do with being present, loving each other, enjoying completing tasks together with peace and patience, and remembering what the season is truly about.

I’m looking forward to appreciating presence :-)
