The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

I have found a common question on most people’s lips upon a first introduction to someone new is: “So, what do you do?”

I don’t know about you, but I know I have hesitated at times before replying, “I’m a stay-at-home mum.”

It’s not that I don’t love my kids. Because I do.

It’s not that I don’t see my mothering role as important. Because I do.

And it’s not that I don’t enjoy being a stay-at-home mum. Because I do. (Well, most of the time; I’m sure we all have those moments).

I think my occasional hesitation is the result of the response I have had from some people in the past. Looks of… Pity. Superiority. Condescension.

But I’ve come to the realization, who cares?! (Yes, I agree with you, I’m a slow learner)!

To be a mother is to be so much more than ‘just’ a mum, whether you are a stay-at-home mum or a working mum. A mother is a nurse, teacher, caregiver, cleaner, accountant, counselor, detective, stylist, cook, garbologist, tutor, health and safety officer, traffic controller, hostage negotiator, seamstress, gardener, party planner, personal assistant, cheerleader, toilet trainer, dietician, correctional officer, diversional therapist, chauffer… among others! What have I missed?

In the words of a favourite author of mine, ‘…the homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only – and that is to support the ultimate career.’ – C.S. Lewis

What an important job we have! Definitely the toughest, but by far the best! And a job of which we should be immensely proud.

The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.

– William Ross Wallace
